Bug Description

It would be awesome to have an Applications docklet, which listed the installed apps -- perhaps with a pinning feature. This would be much akin to OS X's Applications folder.

You can find that folder in linux at /usr/share/applications/ So it is, so it has always been.

I don't agree that such a docklet would be awesome, for this is what /usr/share/applications and the gnome menu are there for.

First of all, /usr/share/applications contains *all* the desktop launchers, also the preferences apps, which is probably not desirable.

I'd like to see the GNOME menu disappear all together, as I believe Docky is a much better approach. A rich Apps docklet would simplify access to commonly used apps.

Docky is a better approach to what, exactly? Remember that Gnome 3 is undoing the Gnome menu already.

The feature request doesn't say what an Apps Docklet would be. I understood something like a popup of the OSX apps window, which is unrelated to the dock in osx afaik. Is it a main-menu docklet? A list of the dozens of installed apps in a popup menu or a drawer? A list of the top-ten used apps? How would it behave? what are the use cases? what would it look like? I don't mean to badger, but if you want this idea you have to sell it more! : )

GNOME 3 lies in the future, and I'd like to see it released before postponing features.

I would imagine the docklet only displaying relevant apps, possibly through collaboration with zeitgeist and/or gnome-do. It would be a place to put stuff that's not on the dock, but you'd like to access somewhat frequently anyway, such as the GIMP, Inkscape, or Brasero.

I'm marking this as a dupe of a newer bug, just because that bug is marked as affecting many more programs and thus 'more comprehensive'. :-)
