Bug Description
Binary package hint: totem
Advanced SubStation Alpha is an open standard. However, if you use the default player of the community-driven operating system Ubuntu to open any MKV file which contains styled subtitles, all you'll see are unstyled and awkwardly large white letters.
The default player of the latest operating system by our closed-source rivals doesn't support them by default either, but we are supposed to be better than them, especially with open standards.
P.S. MPlayer and all its derivatives including GNOME MPlayer render ASS properly.

Nicholas, thank you for reporting this. I am particularly interested in seeing better subtitle support in Linux. Could you please include screenshots for both totem and mplayer to illustrate the difference?
