Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-disk-utility

cryptsetup should be a dependency of gnome-disk-utility (palimpsest) as the Disk utility program displays an option to encrypt underlying filesyste,. but then gives an error when it cannot find cryptsetup. Either gray out the option for encryption if cryptsetup is not installer OR (preferred choice) make cryptsetup a dependancy of gnome-disk-utility

The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the stable release - Oneiric Ocelot. cryptsetup is still not a dependancy of gnome-disk-utility in precise.

Besides this bug, please note that Bug #484429 and Bug #651730 also deal with easily correctable cryptsetup issues (making it a dependancy of ubuntu-desktop, nautilus and gnome-disk-utility would correct all three issues).
