I just checked and I already have libavcodec-extra-52 installed.

I just removed libavcodec-extra-52 and installed the standard libavcodec52. Now Mplayer starts.

Hi,
I don't believe this bug is invalid as I'm still getting exactly the same problem on a fresh and updated install of Karmic 9.10 32bit. I've tried both mplayer from the Ubuntu repos and also a more up-to-date version from a 3rd-party repo. Running mplayer in terminal still gives:

ian@COOLERMASTER:~$ mplayer
mplayer: symbol lookup error: mplayer: undefined symbol: codec_wav_tags
ian@COOLERMASTER:~$

I don't have libavcodec-extra-52 on my system, I still have the standard Ubuntu libavcodec52 installed.

Changing status to "incomplete" due to the above.

OK, I've got Mplayer working now by following this howto here:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1305181

to install mplayer-nogui package from SVN, and then the SMPlayer front-end. This howto includes installation of gcc 4.3 as opposed to using the older gcc 4.1

Perhaps this bug relates to a problem between the standard Ubuntu MPlayer packages, and the older version of gcc?
