Odd behavior adding launcher for specific application

Bug Description

Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic) 64-bit
AWN 0.3.2.1-4ubuntu1 from Ubuntu Karmic repos
Gnome 2.28
Nvidia GeForce 9600 GT with Nvidia proprietary driver v.185

Recently installed Lotus Symphony 1.3. Dragging Symphony menu item from Applications>Office does not create valid AWN launcher. Discovered by trial and error that Symphony launcher in AWN only works if there are TWO copies of the Symphony launcher in the source location.

For example, if I create a desktop copy of the Symphony launcher, and drag it to AWN, it creates an invalid launcher in AWN. If I create a second desktop copy of the Symphony launcher, I can drag either of them to AWN, and the resulting AWN launcher works fine; however, if I subsequently delete the other desktop launcher, the AWN launcher becomes invalid again the next time AWN is started.

This is a problem only with Symphony's launcher. All other application launchers seem to behave normally.

Could you please try the beta version of Awn, to see if your problem is fixed there? The instructions are at our wiki:

Yes, the Symphony icon is added properly, and functions properly, in the beta version.

I will use the two-launcher workaround in 0.3.2.1 until the new version is out of beta or the animation is fixed in the beta. Thanks. :)

Could you please elaborate on "or the animation is fixed in the beta"?

Well, this isn't really part of the same bug, but since you asked:

In 0.3.2.1, when closing a window causes an icon to disappear from the bar, the bar smoothly shrinks, and the other icons glide to the right until they are centered again. In the beta, the bar still shrinks smoothly, but instead of gliding, the remaining icons abruptly jump to their new position. I find this jarring and prefer 0.3.2.1's behavior. I looked for a configuration option to control this but didn't find one.

I assumed it was something you were still working on, since I imagine there was considerable effort expended in making the current version handle it so elegantly.

Also, I didn't see a separator bar in the beta. There's a color option for it in the theme editor but it didn't seem to affect anything.

There is a separator applet, but I don't think that the launcher-tasks separator has been reimplemented, if that's what you're referring to.

Yes, that's what I meant.

dwasifar,

Thanks for replying. Regarding the closing animation, try setting the animation to something other than simple and you should start seeing a closing animation.

If you add separator applets they will use the value in the theme editor.

Anyway, if you do reinstall rewrite at any point and the issues are still present, please feel free to file a new bug.

Thanks.

Thanks. I did try other animations besides simple in an attempt to get it to animate smoothly, but maybe I just didn't hit on the right combo. I'll try the beta again soon and concentrate my efforts on that selection.
