Bug Description

Binary package hint: empathy

I've tried the instruction given from http://live.gnome.org/Empathy/Protocols, but I still cannot get myself to my facebook account through empathy. It keeps showing me a message "network error."
On this thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1240863&page=2, some have made it work but I don't know why after my third attempts, I'm still having the same result

Same problem for me, after an upgrade to Karmic it worked for a day, now it doesn't... may be some process duing post-upgrade (I uninstalled lots of old unused packages, removed their config..)

forgot to add: I'm on a 32-bit system, so this affects not only the 64bit release.

Problem's solved after I installed pidgin-facebookchat plugins from here: http://code.google.com/p/pidgin-facebookchat/
More likely that its version in the karmic's repo is outdated, the newest one is version 1.62

According to #empathy, the problem is related with DNS problem of facebook servers. So currently way to use facebook IM on empathy is:
1- create a new Jabber account
2- username should be: <email address hidden>
3- set server to chat.facebook.com don't change the default port.

Then it should work.

Using the jabber account also doesn't seem to work. I'm still getting "Disconnect -- Network Error"

When I tried to install the plugin in post #5,
the installer popped up a message saying the
program will damage my system.

allthough i doubt it would happen, I stopped the installation
anyway.
