Bug Description

As reported on the Marketing mailing list, the ubuntu marketing group was set up to deal directly with issues of creating a strategy for marketing ubuntu. Currently the team is without any sort of leadership, it doesn't hold very many meetings and so far has been more of a meeting place for other groups.

Originally reported by John Vilsack, there seems to have been political challenges to the organisation last time the marketing team attempted to move forwards. We have no detail yet on what these issues where or who was involved. But it's likely a SADFL type figure would have solved them.

I think sadly when it comes to contributing via to marketing Ubuntu we are not doing a very good job aside from efforts that LoCo's do.

Other communities have well defined "Marketing" and Mozilla is a good example of that. I recently talked to Ubuntu Design about the possibility of having some Web Banners made much like Mozilla has some that way contributors who have blogs could use them to market Ubuntu right on their blog.

The http://spreadubuntu.org/ website has done a phenomenal job of aggregating a variety of resources across multiple languages. The success of spreadubuntu.org was pioneered by a single individual who didn't seek leadership approval or have meetings to plan his site, he just did it, shared it, and people started using it.

As with most teams, we just need people who can step up and do things. Want to work with Ubuntu Design and Art teams to help develop some banners? Go for it. Once you have banners, share them on your blog, encourage others to blog about it, tell the marketing list, ask the Ubuntu News team to include your announcement in UWN, upload the source to spreadubuntu.org so it can be translated and modified based on need.

Good advice and I do agree.

Sometimes I think spreadubuntu doesn't get enough air time in the Ubuntu
Marketing team and thus we have a website which only need s afew
improvements generally to be more useful for marketing. It's just such a
shame it's php based.
