I also have this problem. ubuntu 9.10 kernel 2.6.31-11 amd64 using Firefox 20091006041719 Minefield/3.7a1pre

tried reinstalling flash...

flash WORKS but you usually can't click anything. youtube lets me click PLAY but other videos the clicking makes the button flash but it doesn't actually perform anything. even the flash control panel doesn't respond (I have to use the keyboard and tab/space to select the CLOSE button)

this may work, it worked for me:

download the 64bit plugin from here: http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10.html

remove any existing flash plugins from /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/ AND ~/.mozilla/plugins

extract new version via root to /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins

Strange, confirm Andrews fix, Flash version in repository 10.0 R32 and from download also version 10.0 R32. Broken binary in repository? Not the same file anyway;

I just noticed if I disable all plugins/addons, firefox crashes on any sites with flash...

I eliminated plugin issues, and found that it only works if you have flashblock enabled. with flashblock disabled, I crash on hulu, youtube, etc.

so the clicking works now but there is still some sort of issue with the plugin... time will tell I suppose (maybe in r33?) but the problem exists on both firefox and epiphany so I believe it is flash and not ubuntu or firefox.

Also here... Disabling the Flash Block Firefox plug makes no difference.

The version of Flash bundled with Karmic beta is broken. I'm going to change the importance to Medium since FF+Flash is such a critical component for most users and their experience of Ubuntu.

Jim Kirkpatrick (jim-kirkpatrick) wrote :

Ok, so I can't change the importance because I'm just a lowly scum bag, but I've found some more information.

Turning Compiz off solves the problem for me. Turning Compiz back on crashes Compiz in Karmic beta, so I can't test to see if it just needed a nudge.

Anyway, no re-installation of Flash seems to be required, just turn Compiz off...

Looks like bug #141494 or similar regression?

Can anyone confirm disabling Comiz brings back the Flash love?

I can confirm that disabling Compiz does allow one to click on objects with in flash and everything works fine with out Compiz on, when I do turn it back on I'm back to where I started with no interactivity with flash.

I can also confirm that turning compiz-fusion off enables clicking flash buttons again. They won't work with it on.
I have 9.10 amd64 bit version.

Changed in firefox-3.5 (Ubuntu):

I can confirm that I cannot click flash buttons in Compiz in Karmic amd64. However, switching to Metacity from Compiz does not fix the issue. Could I have a different version of flash than those of you that this switch works for?

Having exactly the same issue with latest karmic beta,

Used the link provided by andrew (http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10.html) to get the latest flash player version.
Tried to replace the /usr/lib/flashplayer-install/libflashplayer.so with the new version but did not work, no idea why.
Finally i had to uninstall flashplayer-install and manually copy libflashplayer.so in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/

Everything now works fine even with compiz turned on. Will try to reinstall flashplayer-install when karmic will hit the final release stage. Hope it will help.

I'm having the same problem although in Firefox. A temporary "fix" is right-clicking on the flash video then left-clicking while keping the right button pressed down. As long as you keep holding the right button clicking should work.

I can confirm Cedric's fix works. I think the problem is that the flashplugin-installer was using an alternative plugin and that even if you manually copy the libflashplayer.so from Adobe, it wasn't getting picked up.

I tried disabling compiz, using the amd64 prerelease but I still couldn't click any flash buttons.

The only workaround so far is keeping another mouse button pressed. Whenever the middle or the right mouse buttons are clicked, the left click works fine as described by bro and Rolander.

Ubuntu Karmic 64 bit. I downloaded the 64 bit version of flash, uninstalled manually the flash-installer packages and extracted the plugin I just downloaded from http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10.html in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins

now the clicking on flash works with compiz enabled

thanks!

Karmic 64 bit. "Stock" install through the ui. Tried swfdec, but it didn't work well, so uninstalled an installed adobe's nonfree.

Compiz on: Left click's don't register.
Compiz on: Right click-and-hold. Left click's register.

Edwards fix for Linux noobs (like me...)

1. Starta a Terminal window.
2. Type: cd /usr/lib/nspluginwrapper/i386/linux/
3. Type: sudo mv npviewer.bin npviewer.bin.real
4. Type: sudo pico npviewer.bin
5. Add these two lines of text to the file, i.e. Pico:
#!/bin/sh
GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS=true /usr/lib/nspluginwrapper/i386/linux/npviewer.bin.real $*
6. Press "Ctrl+x" to exit and save.
7. Type: sudo chmod 755 npviewer.bin

Done! Now enjoy the full splendor of flash-clicking!
