Bug Description
Binary package hint: xorg
with karmic the nvidia 185 driver was used but on boot up the screen was in 640x480 and had to be set by nvidia-settings to 1440x900 each time.
Apart from the permissions problem (not being able to write to xorg.conf without root permissions)
The settings even when written were being ignored.
The solution (work around) is to choose preferences -> display and answer no in the dialog that appears that says the tool can't work with the graphics card, and i would i like to use the vendors instead.
This allows the default resolution to be set and persists across reboots.
obviously there are 2 problems here a failure to raise permissions when needed and the over riding of the nvidia-settings with the (gnome ? ones), Even using kdm as a display manager had the same issue.
The initial problem was caused by an upgrade from 180 - 185 nvidia driver which failed to install the nvidia driver. which forced me to a console where i used vesa to get a working desktop.

- nvidia settings ignored on reboot. + nvidia settings ignored on reboot with KDE. |
I have two systems with the Nvidia 185 driver installed, and both have this problem of settings disappearing, when done with the supplied Nvidia display configuration tool. The problem is nothing new - I remember having it in a couple of previous Ubuntu versions.
The settings indeed stay when I use the regular display configuration tool. That isn't free of problems either, though. The available refresh rates aren't normal: 64, 63, 62, 61, 60 and 59 Hz. Those aren't real, however. When I choose the smallest one, I actually get 90 Hz (which is good for my CRT monitor). The largest, 64 Hz actually gives 65 Hz. Many users probably will try the largest number (if they aren't already scared away when they see the strange numbers) and then give up. But I think I'll make a separate bug report of this issue.
Hardware involved:
Graphics cards Nvidia Geforce 8800 GT and Nvidia Geforce GTX 275
CRT monitors Hitachi CM823F 21" and another one of 19"
