Bug Description

On Asus EEE PC 1000HE running 9.10:

Keyboard shortcuts (XF86AudioMute, XF86AudioLowerVolume, XF86AudioRaiseVolume keys) for controlling volume (through gnome-keybinding-properties application) do not change the sound output at all. The gnome-volume-control-applet shows no changes, but the GNOME popup that appears when hitting the keys shows changes that are not realized.

I'm pretty sure you wanted to report this against the gnome-media package, which contains gnome-volume-control, rather than against gnome-volume-manager, which is for things like CD autoplay and automounting. Feel free to change it back.

I am having the same issue but on Jaunty, 2.6.28-14-generic, pulseaudio 1:0.9.14-0ubuntu20.2

gnome-settings-daemon 2.26.1-0ubuntu2.

XF86AudioRaise/LowerVolume are recognized but are not having any audible effect, nor affecting any mixer control. Pause/Play and Prev and Next work fine though.

gnome-settings-daemon issue?

Workarounds?

I have discovered a workaround. Deleting the .pulse folder works only temporarily. Once the user logs out the issue returns upon log in. To fix this add
rm -rf .pulse
to the Startup Applications.

I have a similar problem (if not the same). I figured out that keyboard shortcuts operate on "Master Volume" instead gnome-volume-applet let you choose the channel to track. In my case, the channel "Master" doesn't affect the output volume at all. The real master volume is instead "Headphone". This is a common problem due to non perfect sound card detection at kernel-level, and explains the channel chooser option in gnome-volume-applet.

For desktop consistency, you should force keyboard shortcuts to operate on the channel chosen in gnome-volume-applet.

What worked for me was changing profile to Analog Surround 4.0 Output (or any other surround option) in sound preferences hardware tab.
