cannot install Automatic updates or new software.

Update, I have resolved this issue by following the steps below which were found on the Ubuntu Forums, Not sure how to close this ticket.

cd /var/lib/dpkg/info
sudo rm libxcb-shape0.list
sudo apt-get --reinstall install libxcb-shape0

I am unable to install automatic updates which appear in the update manager, I get an error:

E: /var/cache/apt/archives/linux-image-2.6.24-22-lpia_2.6.24-22.45netbook9_lpia.deb: files list file for package `libxcb-shape0' is missing final newline

I tried installing vlc player via terminal and received an error:

package liba52-0.7.4 None [modified: /var/lib/dpkg/info/liba52-0.7.4.list] failed to install/upgrade: files list file for package `libxcb-shape0' is missing final newline

trying to add or remove programs using the add/remove program option also give an error related to:

`libxcb-shape0' is missing final newline

I am using a new Dell Inspiron Min 10v with ubuntu 8.04

I have tried sudo apt-get clean & sudo apt-get update, same issue.
