Update manager quit giving information about update at:

 * Starting MySQL database server mysqld
   ...done.
/etc/init.d/mysql: line 115: /etc/mysql/debian-start: Permission denied
invoke-rc.d: initscript mysql, action "start" failed.

I rebooted computer, checked update manager for more updates and no updates were reported.

I started mysql and:

Welcome to the MySQL monitor. Commands end with ; or \g.
Your MySQL connection id is 5
Server version: 5.0.75-0ubuntu10.2-log (Ubuntu)

it seems 5.075 was installed (I hope)

Do you have any idea what changed the default permission of

Did you make a restore from a backup at some point that could have messed up the permission on /etc/mysql/debian-start?

In any case, the init script should check if debian-start can be executed before running it:

                # Now start mysqlcheck or whatever the admin wants.
                output=$(/etc/mysql/debian-start)

No I haven't restarted from backup. The OS has only been installed since Fall of 2008. The line you mentioned is included in the initd./mysql script.

The rest of my /etc/mysql directory is:

drw-r----- 2 root root 4096 2009-04-26 08:06 conf.d
-rw------- 1 root root 312 2008-11-29 07:56 debian.cnf
