reading to empty file causes error

Bug Description
If you don't fill in the file information, and press the "read" button, you get an uninformative error message saying:
An error occurred when attempting to get a handle on the file.
Error 8:
If I try the same test and press the write button, I get a slightly nicer error saying the selected file does not exist.
