Kubuntu Jaunty: No way to connect to OpenVPN

Using an up-to-date Kubuntu Jaunty 9.04 beta.
This is not really an independent bug, but more like a meta-bug that covers several smaller bugs. Every single of the bugs in the various packages is not important, however, I think that in sum the problem is serious, as at the moment it is completely impossible to connect to an OpenVPN network using Kubuntu Jaunty for inexperienced users and without major inconveniences.
The following bugs are involved:
1. Bug #351390 states, that the new network-manager plasmoid at the moment cannot configure OpenVPN connections, which makes it impossible to use such a connection.
2. Bug #326105 notes that it is impossible to return to using knetworkmanager.
3. Bug #291263 and bug #148555 report problems in using the kvpnc client to connect to OpenVPN.
4. Bug #356919 states, that it is also not possible to use the GNOME nm-applet to connect to OpenVPN when using KDE.
I am not aware of any other GUI tools that could help me to connect to OpenVPN. In sum, this means, that all GUI tools that should be able to connect to OpenVPN have bugs that prevent them from working, so that there is no way to connect to OpenVPN using the kubuntu-provided tools at the moment.
Possible workarounds:
1. Of course, it is possible to connect to OpenVPN clients using the command-line tools of openvpn or NetworkManager, however, I think that this is not the intention of kubuntu.
2. Once I had installed all dependencies, I found it relatively simple to build a current version of kvpnc that can connect to OpenVPN. This is what I currently use.
Possible solutions:
I think to solve the problem quickly, there are two possible approaches:
1. Fix knetworkmanager so that it can be used in Jaunty.
2. Package an up-to-date version of kvpnc.

We don't track meta bugs. We know that the situation is really less than optimal, but meta bugs tend to never actually lead to anything, and are very hard to manage since they track multiple issues.
