3) The new black indicators on the top left of the screen should indicate changes in screen brightness and volume.

4) They don't. They are not displayed any more. Until some days ago, they worked fine for sound and displayed something wrong for brightness (see Bug 351850). Now they are completely gone for both. However, they are still available to Pidgin.
