ligature kerning broken

Bug Description

On current Dapper, kerning of ligatures is broken: something appears to be treating ligatures (fi, ff, fl, etc.) as though they were only as wide as the first character, thus causing the next character to be overprinted on the second part of the ligature. This is recent breakage, perhaps in the last week, although I don't know exactly what I upgraded to cause it.

I'll attach a couple of screenshots of parts of Planet Debian in Firefox to demonstrate the problem.

The "g" in "fontconfig" is overprinted on the preceding "i".

don't think this is a fontconfig bug. most likely another incompatibility with the new pango and a specific font. which fonts did you use?
