Bug Description

If I mute the audio in Ubuntu 8.10 and then reboot (leaving the audio muted) the audio is still muted after that - everything is working as it should. But if i want to unmute it, it does actually unmute the audio but sets the volume to zero (same effect as mute -> see screenshot). Clicking mute again, mutes the sound with volume still at zero. I have to manually increase the volume in order to get sound working again. Note: This behaviour does only occur after rebooting with sound muted.
I have installed the latest patches and btw i noticed this bug in earlier version of Ubuntu, afair it existed since Gutsy.

This bug still appears on Jaunty RC. Is there anything I can do to help fixing it? I am not a good programmer btw.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue for you. Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

Yes the bug still affects me. I can reproduce it with Ubuntu Jaunty (all updates applied).

I can confirm this on jaunty. It's trivial to reproduce. Just mute and reboot and notice that volume is still muted, but at level 0. Not sure what package should handle saving audio state though. Maybe someone from Ubuntu Audio Team can help, I subscribed them.

I can duplicate this bug on Jaunty installed on a Acer M1610 which has a embedded SiS966 audio card with a Realtek ALC1200 chip.
I don't have this bug on my laptop IBM X41 with Jaunty installed on it.

Same bug on jaunty on an HP dv2872. Besides rebooting with volume at level 0 and muted, the mute led turns blue, when it should be red(the mute light works fine in every other case). I don't know if the led problem is related to the volume one.

According to lspci, I have an Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02). Are people experiencing this with different hardware, or can this be traced to a specific driver?

I have the same Audio Controller as you, Gabe (except I have rev 03).

It sounds like this is a driver bug then. Can anyone confirm this on any hardware other than Intel 82801H?

is https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/453776 a duplicate. That bug seems to be reporting the sound being unmuted before rebooting, and mute after.

Does running alsa-utils (sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils start) have any effect on this?

Right, just to clarify, in bug #453776, the volume is muted and set to zero after boot. This is exactly the same as this bug except in that bug, it seems to be happening randomly, whereas in this bug, it is caused by muting the volume before shutdown.
