Bug Description

Whenever pidgin or evolution is opened the notification icon opens as well, however, at some point my notification icon disappears. I do not receive any error message. I have pidgin running nearly the entire time my computer is on, evolution I have only used a few times to try it out. Not sure what info will help track this down so please direct me.

Hmm, that is odd. There was an update today, so make sure you've got
the latest version 0.1.3. Then you can run and get all of the debugging
messages to a terminal. To do that you'll need to replace the one in
your panel with one in the terminal.

  $ killall indicator-applet
  $ /usr/lib/indicator-applet/indicator-applet

There will be dialog that pops up from the panel, if you click "Reload"
then it will pull in the one from your terminal. When you notice it
gone, could you attach the most recent messages?

Thanks.

alright so ive done that but I assume the debug info is not helpful until the icon dissapears. It has not happened to me possibly since the update today. Ill attach the debug info next time it happens.

Ok happened again ive attached a file of the terminal output. It happened at some time after the last IM message (i did not notice immediately). My untrained eye only sees one unusual line.
"** (indicator-applet:4208): DEBUG: Removing server: :1.63"

Same thing again with slightly different numbers possibly because I moved the position of the icon.

I'm also having this problem, with the same type output that others have put in the "notification-icon" files. I spent most of today trying to duplicate the bug in a backtrace, but it is like the bug is hiding from me when I try to gather data on it. Does anyone have any suggestions for reliably duplicating this bug, so I can gather some useful data on it?

After a bit of WOMBAT wrangling, I finally managed to get what seems to be a decent backtrace (see attachment). If there is anything else I can do to gather useful data on the bug, please let me know.

I'm seeing this with 100% repeatability. I use both Pidgin and Evolution. When I open them, they both appear in the indicator applet as expected. However, eventually they both seem to disappear from the applet in turn (never at the same time), so that the applet hides, as if neither Evolution or Pidgin are open. The only way to get it back again is to close Evolution and Pidgin and restart them both

I've no idea what triggers this. Sometimes it only takes a few minutes for this to happen, but it's never more than a couple of hours for both Pidgin and Evolution to disappear.

I can confirm this bug.
Pidgin is the only app I use, that uses indicator-applet, and whenever I've had pidgin running for some time, pidgin gets "removed" from indicator-applet, which triggers the applet to not show. The only way to get it back is to restart pidgin.

I'm trying to hunt down the reason for this.

I believe that this is fixed with the most recent release of indicator-messages, 0.1.4. If you do have that version and are still seeing this please comment as such. Thank you!

I was wrong. I now know what is happening. Indicate servers are
registered by their DBus name, but only that. So if a server on the
system bus and the session bus have the same name, and one leaves, it
will unregister the server on the other bus.

I have the same problem but a little differently: I opened both Evolution and Pidgin and, after some time, one of them dissappears from the applet menu.

I would like to add that this also occurs for me on resume from suspend. It disappears randomly as well, but I can force it to happen by suspending and then resuming.

Ted, you've marked this bug as fixed on 2009-04-08, but I can't see any explicit comment about it in the latest indicator-applet version 0.1.5-0ubuntu1 released on 2009-04-03 in Jaunty:

indicator-applet (0.1.5-0ubuntu1) jaunty; urgency=low

  * debian/control: Switching libindicate0 to libindicate1 to express
    the fact that the binary compatibility is broken.
  * debian/libindicate0.install changed to debian/libindicate1.install
  * New upstream version:
    * Adds new API for detecting interests of various listeners. Implemented
      on both client and server side. (LP: #353112)
    * Makes it so that all objects down to the menu now use the gtkstyle
      naming from FUSA to ensure that they all pick up the theme hacks that
      are set for FUSA. (LP: #334490)
    * Explicitly sets the about window's window icon. (LP: #356437)

Does that version solves the issue? Is that version the latest one? Please, tell me if I'm wrong. Thanks in advance.

Yes, part of your confusion probably steams from this being an upstream
bug and not a package bug. So the changelog from the Ubuntu package
only lists the fact that it's upstream, and which bugs are fixed that
are Ubuntu package bugs. Upstream bugs get managed differently in that
we target them to milestones and use the status to show their state. I
agree that it's confusing, but I assure you it's fixed :)
