Mh, i can't reproduce this.
I am a little bit confused because of the empty ''image format" combobox in your screenshot:

Why is no image format selected? This would be a reason for this strange behavior.

its a little confusing to have to pick a format especially since the format was already chosen in the prefs
and is reflected in the screen shot
as well as the filename.suffix

suggestion:
why don't you do what GIMP does?:
just let the file suffix (i.e. jpg, png, bmp) in the filename determine the file type
but if I want to CHANGE the file type upon saving the file then I can use the pull down to select a different format

also, changing the Image Format will add the corresponding file type suffix to the filename

for example:
- my prefs are set for default: jpeg
- I have a screen grab called 'foo1.jpeg'
- I select save
- the Image Format pull-down picks up the file suffix in the file path and indicates the file type as: 'jpeg - The JPEG image format'

suggestion 2: why not use the three character file type of 'jpg' instead of 'jpeg'?

yeah choosing a image format fixes it, but it should at least be something by default (like png)....and i agree that the file extension in the name should dictate what format its saved as, as well as maybe having a prefs option to specify the default image format?

It is already implemented that way.
But it is not working properly on all systems ;-)

Can you please run the attached perl script and post the output here? It will determine the supported mimetypes and file formats. There must be a reason why the corresponding image format is not selected by default.

Ah, no need to run the perl script above.
I've managed to reproduce this on one of my virtual machines. There will be a fix in the next days.
