Just a comment, Daniel: this *only* happens while under the French locale. If I run under the en_US.UTF8 locale (via 'env LC_ALL=en_US.UTF8 whatever), then there is no problem.

In fact, for some few weeks I did that; eventually I got fed up, and switched to en_US completely. And... I no more have this error. So, I am not quite sure this is the same issue.

To wit:

(1) Under the Frencg locale:
