Bug Description

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

Arecord or pulseaudio seems to be broken:

$ arecord -d 10 -f cd -t wav foobar.wav
Recording WAVE 'foobar.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 44100 Hz, Stereo
arecord: pcm_read:1473: read error: Input/output error

This was experienced with Intrepid live CD as of 2008-10-11. Pulseaudio is version "0.9.10-2ubuntu8".

I am getting the same error from my ubuntu 8.10 beta install on my Acer Travelmate 240. My system is updated as of 10/26/08, and I am still getting this error.

I have had the same problem.

I stoped pulseaudio with "killall pulseaudio"
(This may crash some application---close all windows first)

Maybe this workaround will allow you to record audio files again.
Please post again if this does not work for you.
