Bug Description

Subject says it all.

I observe the problem on a pretty common hardware (Intel Centrino Duo platform). My machine is Dell Inspiron 640m: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/DellInspiron640m

To start the session it helps to disable splash.

--- addition:
With the enabled "splash" option the behavior of the system seem to vary from boot to boot although in most cases final result is the black screen instead of GDM login screen.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it without more information.

Please include the following additional information, if you have not
already done so (pay attention to lspci's additional options), as
required by the Ubuntu Kernel Team:
1. Please include the output of the command "uname -a" in your next
response. It should be one, long line of text which includes the exact
kernel version you're running, as well as the CPU architecture.
2. Please run the command "dmesg > dmesg.log" after a fresh boot and
attach the resulting file "dmesg.log" to this bug report.
3. Please run the command "sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log" and attach
the resulting file "lspci-vvnn.log" to this bug report.

For your reference, the full description of procedures for
kernel-related bug reports is available at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies Thanks in advance!

More observations.

It appears that session starts (I hear Ubuntu login sound) but there is no image on the LCD panel. So, I started it and collected the requested info + Xorg.0.log (see attachment).

uname -a:
Linux ubuntu 2.6.26-5-generic #1 SMP Sun Aug 10 20:30:28 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux

It turned out, that it is also possible to run live-session by selecting the "Install Ubuntu" entry (instead of "Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer") and then quitting the installer.

It is weird.

On the installed Intrepid I switched off splash option immediately after install (few days back), because I could not get xsession running. Without splash option system booted and worked like a charm.

Now, I've put back a splash option and I can not reproduce the behavior consistently: sometimes system boots till the gdm login screen, sometimes it is not (out of 10 or so reboots).

So, the bug is not about live session and is not about alpha4 anymore...

I still observe the behavior described in the initial posting.
Probably, the problem is not related to usplash. I will update bug description shortly.
