avi video plays on negative colors and off of the totem window

I've just installed Ubuntu few day ago, and it's plays fine, but when I restarted it, the problem started. I don't remember if it was before or after I made the update. Sorry.

I have the same problem on 8.04. My system is fresh install from 8.04 release disk plus I added all codecs. Video plays in inverse colors in any player. Video card is GeForce 8600 GTS, drivers 169.12+2.6.24.12-16.34

Story is same in 64-bit or 32-bit installations. Removing "proprietary" nvidia drivers makes video play correctly.

I was able to SOLVE the problem on my system. Playing movie in Totem (which was playing in inverse colors) I opened Edit->Options, tab Video and changed value of the last slider, Hue. Video plays in correct colors if slider is set to min or max values, inverse colors are shown if slider is in middle position. One note, initially the hue level (or at least the slider) was set in leftmost position, I just had to move it.

the comments indicate a closed source nvidia driver bug

The same thing happened to me and all the video players started showing negative colors. The fix was to change the hue value in the setting in Totem. I have a an nVidia GeForce 8400M GS graphics card and use the proprietary driver that comes with Ubuntu 8.04.

We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? (ISOs are available from cdimage.ubuntu.com)

If it remains an issue, could you also attach a new /var/log/Xorg.0.log?

The output of lspci -vvnn would also be worth having.

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.

Same bug with same solution on 8.10 with an VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GeForce 9600M GT (rev a1) on 64 bit architecture...

I am using the proprietary nvidia drivers, so it might be related to that

Am seeing this too, using Totem Movie Player on a Lenovo T61 ThinkPad with Nvidia proprietary drivers.

This can be fixed by moving the "Hue" slider, as indicated above.

Suggests to me this is a Totem problem, and one which could be fixed.

It's not a totem problem. Kaffeine too have negative colors.

   1. Open gstreamer-properties (alt+f2, enter gstreamer-properties)
   2. Change to the video tab
   3. Change the default output plugin to "custom"
   4. Place the following command in the bottom box: videobalance hue=-1 ! autovideosink
   5. Close the box and enjoy your now correct colour

It's fix for my problem. Maybe flag "videobalance hue=-1" must be included by default?
