Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24-14-generic

The kernel driver loads OK, but trying to start X with the fglrx driver freezes the machine.

This looks similar to other reported problems, but in those cases only the display was black. Changing the config file to include DefaultDepth also didn't solve this problem.
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon HD 3850

I will try the manual method from
http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Hardy_Installation_Guide

I managed to start X from a ssh connection to try to get some logs, but that didn't work. Does X needs a flag to log to stderr?

Installing the driver from the amd site results in the same bug.

Next stop: radeonhd. Looks like the git version has support for dual link DVI :-)

radeonhd works :-)

Does this counts as a fix?

I have the same issue with the AGP version of this card (black screen and system hang). radeonhd does work just fine (of course no 2d or 3d acceleration) , in fact that's about the only driver that even 1/2 way works! But I am actually able to load X if I blacklist the blacklist amd64_agp and agpgart modules. Granted then my DRI won't load and performance in 2D is worse than radeonhd. I think I'm getting there but still needs some help.

Hi rafael-espindola,

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? (ISOs are available from cdimage.ubuntu.com)

If it remains an issue, could you also attach a new /var/log/Xorg.0.log?
Thanks in advance.

The output of lspci -vvnn would also be worth having.

I don't know. I downloaded a new version of the open source driver.
Since it has support for dual link dvi, I am happy with it.

As of Intrepid (8.10), we have a dedicated package 'fglrx-installer' for fglrx bugs, which now includes a process for upstreaming bugs to AMD.

  http://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer

To transition your bug into the new fglrx-package, we need your help. Please do the following:

 a. Verify the bug occurs in Intrepid.
     (Intrepid ISOs: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com)
 b. If you haven't already, please include in the bug:
     * Your /var/log/Xorg.0.log
     * The output of `lspci -vvnn`
     * Steps to reproduce the issue
 c. Click 'Also affects distribution'
 d. Set 'Source Package Name' to 'fglrx-installer'
 e. Click Continue

Thank you. This will assist us in reviewing and upstreaming your fglrx bug, as appropriate.

[We'll expire the fglrx bugs in l-r-m-* in a month or so.]
