Had this problem while installing OpenOffice in Heron (AMD64). It appears that there is a missing package dependency for Java Runtime Environment in writer2latex. Possibly more correctly addressed with dependencies for openoffice.org-java-common.

Solved by installing: sun-java6-bin, sun-java6-javadb, sun-java6-jre

I was joining through the update manager and even tried it with apt-get same results on my iMac ppc Beta of Hardy Heron.
