Bug Description

I have tried several times to get Deja Dup to work, but it always FAILS to backup. I have reformatted the destination drive several times, I have uninstalled Deja Dup and installed it from another source, and still it fails to back up.

At this point I feel that Deja Dup is infested with bugs and not worth my time since it never works.

I am using POP!_OS 20.04LTS, a 500-Gb SSD, and a 1-TB external USB-C SSD for by backup destination.

There seems to be no documentation on Deja Dup that explains what the required hardware should be, what software is needed, what file system that should be on the destination drive, and just how to operate the Deja Dup application.

A downloadable PDF of operating instructions would be a real plus and would be helpful in setting Dejs Dup up the first time.

Maybe the Deja Dup author could make some of the above available?

Hello! I'm sorry that Deja Dup is giving you a hassle.

First, to address the hardware question - we should work fine with external drives. Depending on how they are formatted, you may have to make sure that the permissions are correct. Usually external drives work best (in general, not just a Deja Dup thing) with a permission-less format like FAT32, so that the drive's permissions don't clash with the system's permissions.

But anyway, I'm not sure if that's what's happening with your case.

You've commented on and linked some other support tickets, which I don't think are related. Let's focus on the issue you're seeing.

I did see your screenshot posted on a different ticket: https://gitlab.gnome.org/World/deja-dup/uploads/9dfd1b1113f8f8a1cfa38bf4846125cb/Backup_failed_screenshot.png

That makes it look like a permission error indeed... Can your user make new folders / files on that drive in the Files browser (nautilus)? I doubt this is a Deja Dup specific issue if you can't.
