Does your audio hardware actually support full duplex?

I have no idea, but the operations are done separately: i record, stop, then playback.
I'll update the description to make that clear

Daniel, the hardware does allow me to this using the version available in 7.04. I have recently tested this on Jaunty (audacity 1.3.6-2) and it works perfectly. Present tracks are played while the new track is recorded.

Daniel, is there a command that can test if the audio hardware for full duplex support or is that something I should check in the card specifications?

komputes, what are your settings under edit -> preferences in Audacity? And what is the error message you receive?

Pulseaudio was added as standard in Hardy. I suspect that this can be pulseaudio related, so the fix to #178895 (which I don't know if it will be backported to Hardy and Intrepid) might have fixed your problem as well.

My audacity preferences were set to default. I did try playing around with them but they would never allow me to record and playback properly. This seems to have been fixed (that is to say I have yet to see this issue) on Audacity 1.3.7-1 in Jaunty.

Now using audacity 1.3.7-2build1 on Jaunty, still no issues. Marking bug as "Fix Released".
