Bug Description

I am using Arc menu in default layout and look so have noticed that some categories are missing icons, namely Internet, Office and Utilities. They are instead drawn from Adwaita or highcolor.

Also the Variety wallpaper manager installed from your repository has a badly blurred appearance on dash-to-panel compared to the status icons next to it.

Please look into these as they are things that could be addressed in yaru-theme-icon preferably.

yaru-theme-icon:

Version - yaru-theme (20.04.6) focal

lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 20.04 LTS
Release: 20.04

The blurry icon for "Variety wallpaper manager" would probably be because that app doesn't provide low resolution icons for itself. I don't think it's reasonable to blame Yaru for that part if it's not a common icon.

Thanks for your 'education', I'm not blaming anyone but perhaps could have worded the above better. I was not aware until about 10 minutes ago that Variety did it's own thing. I am new to GNOME but not Linux or language barriers causing communication issues between us mere plebs and you developers.

'Should' 'does not mean I am blaming, if Ubuntu want a uniform look it would not be uncommon for them to apply a different icon to override the application's. That's what custom icon themes do after all.

I simply questioned if it could be looked into along with the other missing icons. Anyhow, since posting I have been looking into Variety further. It does indeed do it's own thing about tray icons. I have found a way around that for now and note that an issue is already open on github:

https://github.com/varietywalls/variety/issues/319

My workaround for that particular issue is to set a 'custom' icon in Variety settings. I have set the preferences-desktop-wallpaper-symbolic.svg and it looks fine now.

To whoever IS actually responsible for the Yaru themes I hope this clarifies I am not 'blaming' you for anything. The category icons still some need attention though please.

Variety's indicator icon is themeable - if you you choose the "Light" option for the icon, Variety will first check if the current GTK theme has an icon named "variety-indicator" and will use it instead of the bundled light icon.

Therefore, it could also be done if desired.

Could you post a screenshot of the same panel with Adwaita icon set?

As per post six the icon for Variety was set back to custom for the latter screenshots. Rest assured it was the same though as with Yaru. I just added them for further Launcher category icon information to the Adwaita one requested.

Please answer with this information a lot faster than after 5 months in future.

By the way, if the person creating the icon theme had checked the icons for categories properly before packaging it in the first place I wouldn't have unwittingly wasted your time reporting it in the wrong place. The Ubuntu Wiki says to report bugs here so that's what I did. Not my fault if there is misinformation on the site.

Anyhow. You can close this bug seeing as it's in the wrong place. I could also care less if you fix it or not personally but other users might benefit from you doing so.

Please, don't get it personally, but the reason for the late reply is that this is not the place where we look for issues to solve. Moreover, yaru-theme project here in LP says the official bug tracker is on GitHub. Could you please tell me which wiki are you referring to, to se if we can fix it?
Thanks.

How to report bugs
Ubuntu uses Launchpad to keep track of bugs and their fixes. This page will guide you through the steps required to file a good and detailed report.

I was under the impression Yaru was an Ubuntu package :S

Thank you. Yaru was born for Ubuntu, but it's a community project with a small team.

But nevermind, I just there is no reason to take things personally.

We also only support gnome shell plus the Ubuntu gnome shell extensions (dash to dock, desktop icons)
How does your screenshot look with the Adwaita icon theme? If the icons are also missing there, we do not plan to fix it in yaru just for the sake of satisfying users of an unsupported gnome shell extension

arc-menu is unsupported by whom exactly? It's in Focal Fossa repositories and it's also still being actively developed upstream. With Adwaita it is fine, Numix Circle is also fine.

If I had installed arc-menu from a third party site or PPA then there would be no way I'd have submitted this bug via Ubuntu channels.

What happens if users of UbuntuMATE, Lubuntu, Xubuntu, Kubuntu, Ubuntu Cinnamon etc. want to use Yaru? Will you fob them off too because they aren't using GNOME when they ask about the missing icons?

The Icon theme rather disappointingly is not complete and if I were maintaining it and someone pointed this out I'd thank them and try to fix it rather than blaming them for not using the desktop in the very restrictive manner you seem to want them too. I really like the concept of it and wanted to use it but your attitude and unwillingness to fix it has left a bad taste and made me think twice about ever reporting any bugs against Ubuntu in the future.

The way I see now is that if I want to carry on using Yaru at some point in the future I will have to fork it from your git that was pointed out to me a few posts back and fix this for myself when I have time to do so.

I may have been a bit vociferous and clearly that rubbed some of you up the wrong way and put you on the defensive. I don't apologise for that, you should take my passion about this as a compliment rather than an insult. When I am enthusiastic about something (even if someone else made it) I'd see it highly polished rather than clearly unfinished, even if it takes a couple of updates to get to that point.

Nope, this is still wrong from my point of view. If you upset anyone with no reason you should just apologise.

Thank you for reporting the issue, though.
