Bug Description

We tried to install the 3.18.7 printer driver package and the install would not complete. We then decided to research why and found that may other engineers/customers are having the same problem. See URL below.
  The problem if we proceed, what happens if we finally install printer driver and other printers stop working? We then have to revert back to the older printer version. The bottom line, there is no good work around.

We found a difference in Linux between a plugin and print driver and the plugin could “possible” resolve the issue. We have not found the exact plugin but wanted to ask if you have the details. The checking writing/signature printer we have documented is HP LaserJet Enterprise M607.

Hi,

Arch linux distro is not supported by the HPLIP driver.
We have added CDS feature as part of HPLIP 3.18.7 version. This feature changes are incompatible with Arch linux distro.
So kindly install supported distro's for the HPLIP 3.18.7 driver or use HPLIP 3.18.6 driver in Arch linux which doesnot have CDS feature changes.

Thanks,
Srinivas Teja.

What does "CDS" stand for and what is it intended to do?

I noticed that there is a new release labeled 3.18.9. Does this have the CDS feature included in it?

I thought that was a really easy question for someone to answer; maybe someone at HP? :)

One thing related to printing that matches the acronym is the "Counterfeit Deterrence System". I wouldn't be surprised if this is the reason for the closed source blob without real information.

The only place I can find any mention of "cds" is in installer/text_install.py:

https://fossies.org/linux/hplip/installer/text_install.py

 if core.distro_name.lower() == 'fedora' and core.distro_version < '28':
 #print("SELinux enabling the 'cups_execmem' boolean ")
 cds_cmd = 'su -c "setsebool -P cups_execmem 1"

setsebool is an selinux command, so cds_cmd just looks like a way to ensure problems for printing on Fedora are minimized. Perhaps cds is "core distro selinux"?
