Bug Description

ubuntu hardy heron 8.04
update-manager, add/remove, synaptic and firestarter firewall do not run/crash on startup.
tried $ sudo apt-get install -f , command returns "sudo: unable to resolve host [hostname]"

also, update-manager appears as active icon in panel, on double-click, process fetches updates list but recommends "partial upgrade to install as many updates as possible", then crashes. ignoring that and choosing to install all updates crashes as well. force quit not possible.

Are you sure the hostname of your machine can be resolved?

entry in /etc/hostname does not match entry in /etc/hosts for "host"
sudo won't allow me to gedit either of these files from terminal because
it is "unable to resolve host (...)"

bug #178831 by CACLF describes same problem as in this bug report and it seems to provide possible workaround therein.
