I hope, it will be solved until 18.04 comes out.
Otherwise I can not use it.

Not happening with a gnome-shell on xorg session.
If gstreamer1.0-vaapi is installed, then purge it.

gstreamer1.0-vaapi is not installed,

Run totem from the terminal shows "GLib-CRITICAL **: 14:23:22.871: g_key_file_load_from_file: assertion 'file != NULL' failed"

Then it looks like a libglib2.0-0 error, which is totem dependency. Maybe related to your hardware/mem.

Checking the totem settings, via dconf (dconf-editor), all the options here are 'off' except the first one 'autoload-chapters'
(org.gnome.totem)

Note: #4 expose glib error, but #6 says no error !!!
Note2: is there some 'journalctl -b' related error when you double click on a mp4 video to be played via totem ?

affects: gstreamer1.0 (Ubuntu) → glib2.0 (Ubuntu)

In journalctl -b is the same error message regarding totem.

So, now I have additionally installed lxqt and I can say, it ist definitly a problem in budgie! Why ever.
In lxqt totem plays the video perfect.

Can you change it to budgie?

affects: glib2.0 (Ubuntu) → budgie-desktop (Ubuntu)

I have tried it: totem in lxqt works, parole in budgie works too, but totem in budgie fails.
It is a problem from totem in budgie.

The gnome shell I have not installed, but dino99 wrote, it works.
