Bug Description

Since I have updated from 16.10 to 17.04 I am hunted by total system freezes (i.e. cannot move mouse, screen content is not updated, cannot switch to text terminal, even Caps Lock cannot be toggled). I have seen this 3 times already, two times with Firefox active and once while I was typing in Konsole, but with Firefox running in the back. Following log is from the last time and it also mentions 'firefox' so I think this is somehow relevant. From kern.log:

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1683889/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

I have also been experiencing this problem since upgrading (via built in mechanism) from 16.04 to 17.04.

Usually it is a complete freeze, none of the alt combinations work that I have tried so far. Once I did get a terminal.

I am using the Gnome desktop.

Intel i7-6700 & 530 Skylake GT2. Ubuntu 17.04 x64.

I am facing this issue too.
Complete system freeze after 17.04 upgrade. numlock/capslock also don't toggle.

Firefox was always running on my system, when this issue was hit. It already hit 4-5 times in last 3 days.

I was using gnome flashback metacity desktop.

I will try using kernel from 16.10 and update here.

I also have a likely problem. My Laptop was freezing four times while using the built in internet browser (NOT Mozilla Firefox) after installing Ubuntu 17.04.

Other issue: Also there was a warning that all my programs on ubuntu 15.10 would be deleted (not my personal data). Now it's all gone. I know I should have stored it but updating to earlier versions before, always kept my personal data. Until now I experienced a big step back to the bad old times of ubuntu. Hope to find some advantages now. It's now 6 month since april. Will this issue ever be fixed?

Hi guys,

In my case, it was a hardware issue. My on-board video was broken, so I
need a new computer. Sorry and thanks.
