Bug Description

After I connect my phone with MTP protocol pantheon-files fails to create thumbnails for files (pdf, jpg, png etc.) and when I try to open one of the files (lets say pdf) it gives me "Cannot open files with this protocol (mtp)" error.

Reproduce:
- Connect your android phone and chose MTP form your phone,
- open pantheon-files and mount your phone.
- Browse your files and try to open one file from your phone directory.

Edit:
OS: Loki 4.0
Phone: Android 6.0.1

pantheon-files 0.3.0.4-0~r2380+pkg57 amd64
libmtp-common 1.1.10-2ubuntu1 all
libmtp-runtime 1.1.10-2ubuntu1 amd64
libmtp9:amd64 1.1.10-2ubuntu1 amd64

This is the expected behaviour at present because of limitations in the gvfs-mtp backend, but it does need to be fixed if possible.

My Android phone gives the options of Charging, File Transfer (mtp) or Photo Transfer (ptp) when the USB is plugged but I have not found a (gnome/gtk) file manager that can show thumbnails over mtp so I guess this is not implemented upstream (yet).

However, other filemanagers can launch the photos in a local photo viewer so I guess the "cannot open" message is no longer needed.

The Files project is not transferred to here: https://github.com/elementary/files

A new issue related to the opening of image files over mtp should be created.

Actually, I find that if I chooser "Photo Transfer (ptp)" then the images are thumbnailed and launched as expected. Given that, I am not sure that there is a need to do it over mtp.

Hmm, actually I find that if I remove the restrictions on mtp in the Files code to allow browsing, streaming and opening I find that thumbnailing and launching works perfectly (!). So I guess it has been fixed upstream after all. The only problem is that the pathbar does not display the path properly for mtp uris but that should be easy to fix.

Perfect news. Thank you for taking care of it.

After fixing it, you can close this too I guess: https://github.com/elementary/files/issues/186
