no graphics on console when using vga=791 as a kernel boot option

Bug Description
after upgrading from ubuntu 7.04 to ubuntu 7.10 my consoles are not accesibles. neither from gnome (by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1-6) neither directly during the boot process ( if i disable usplash the screen blancks untill gdm is loaded)
I've got a notebook with nforce chipset, nvidia integrated graphic card. nvidia propretary driver 100.14.19 installed, kernel 2.6.20-
