Bug Description

After upgrading from utopic to vivid beta, many (but apparently not all) icons in Unity contain pixellation artifacts, as if it's been scaled up very slightly. Please see the attachment and note the launcher, as well as "Security & Privacy" which was highlighted when taking the screenshot.

Thank you for your bug report, I don't see anything really wrong on that screenshot, not that some recent fixes landed, https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/humanity-icon-theme/0.6.8 ... could you try if that's still an issue? In any case probably not an unity issue since the security icon in the settings has nothing to do with unity code

Updating and rebooting trusty today did not help.

Note in the original screenshot how the chevron in the terminal icon is lopsided (enlarged 400% in aa2.png), and the top edge of the disk icon at the bottom is jagged. Also, I've made aa1.gif (also at 400%), which shows when the security icon is hovered over, its gets a badly antialiased dark border. (The 256 color limitation of gif introduces its own artifacts, but the original problem is still clearly visible.)

I've just updated from Utopic to Vivid and I think I have the same problem. Icons in the Unity Launcher are jagged (see for example Sublime Text icon in screenshot unity-launcher-a.png). Notice the difference between Sublime Text icon in unity-lancher-a.png and unity-launcher-b.png- in the second screenshot I modified /usr/share/applications/sublime-text.desktop by setting Icon=/usr/share/icons/hicolor/128x128/apps/sublime-text.png instead of Icon=sublime-text. The icon looks much better than in unity-launcher-a.png. It seems that if Icon parameter is set to "sublime-text", Unity automatically picks icons which are the closest to launcher icon size configured in Appearance Settings (34px in my case). Thus the Sublime Text icon in unity-launcher-a.png is actually the 48x48 icon, scaled down. The problem is that something is wrong scaling, and the resulting icons look bad. Other bad-looking examples in my screenshots are: Digikam, Eclipse, Terminal.

I'm not seeing this on a clean install of 15.10 Beta 2. Does this only occur on an upgrade to a later release?

It is possible that this could be an issue only for upgrade cases. In my
case I upgraded my 14.10 to 15.04 and faced this issue. This was the first
time I went through the upgrade process. Before this I have always done a
clean install and never faced the issue.
