Bug Description

Binary package hint: tracker

On Gutsy Tribe 4, Tracker is installed by default but doesn't replace places-search so it is only accessable under accessories, meaning that users see two different search frontends on the default desktop. It should hide the accessories menu item and install a .desktop file to replace places-search (Beagle used to do this, the old pre-Feisty packages)

is Tracker's nautilus integration working ? (if not, this could confuse the user, too)

The only problem with this is that tracker only searchs in indexed directoried, while instead the normal search tool can search in the whole filesystem

@Nicolo

1) Searching stuff outside ~ is only interesting for the type of people compiling their own kernel or running a webserver. The average user on Ubuntu just wants to search his/her own files

2) Searching stuff that way is slow. Really slow.

3) The expert user can easily make tracker index everything he/she has access to. (System->Preferences->Indexing)

4) The normal system-wide style slow search is still availabel with deskbar. But a .desktop entry in the accessories menu wouldn't hurt.

is it possible to add another search in the same menu (Places)?

- search in indexed files
- search in the whole filesystem

or is the number of search entries limited?

Can this be fixed before Gutsy final? In my opinion it's very confusing for users since Tracker is integrated nearly everywhere in the desktop (Nautilus, gtk file-open dialog etc.) except where I would suspect it is, namely Places > Search for files. I suggest placing the Tracker search tool under Places > Search for files and the gnome-search-tool under Applications > Accessories.

best solution in my opinion:
change places>search for files to launch tracker search tool,
then add a button in tracker search tool (perhaps at the bottom of the catergories side pane, or in the file menu) called "Advanced search" which brings up the usual gnome search tool
then remove accesories> tracker search tool of course
when tracker is uninstalled, the link should point to gnome-search-tool again

almost all users will only want to use the tracker search tool functionality, and would otherwise be confused when clicking places>search and seeing a search tool which is different to the tracker search they expect, and very slow at searching.

any progress on this? any chance for hardy?

In my opinion gnome search for files tool interface is much better than the tracker search tool. There are lot of complaints in the forums about the confusing nature of tracker search - sometimes people want to search just by filename, but tracker is always returning always all results whether their filename or content matches. Ability to specify explicitly search criteria for file name and / or for file content is essential. Gnome search tool also ads ability to specify additional search criteria, such as modification date and size (as well as others). These criteria are very important.
I think that tracker UI as it is implemented now is inadequate for replacing gnome search for files tool.
