Bug Description

Forking from LP #121163:

Using nv driver from package xserver-xorg-video-nv_2.1.2-2ubuntu1_i386.deb, on an Inspiron 1420 system with the NVIDIA 8400M GS card, when an external monitor is connected to it, pressing Fn+F8 does not behave as expected:

1. When the external monitor is attached, the screen displays on both the laptop screen and the external monitor (without even pressing Fn+F8).
2. After pressing Fn+F8, both screens go blank.
3. Pressing Fn+F8 a second time displays garbled graphics on both the laptop screen and external monitor.

I can't go to any of the virtual consoles to try to recover, the only way to do so is by doing a hard reboot.
