Bug Description

Binary package hint: gthumb

In a directory with several (13) large (~45MB, 10000x14000px, 8bit grayscale) tiff files (scanned documents) gthumb soon uses excessive memory and makes the whole system unresponsive (about 30s after starting gthumb, 4 thumbnails displayed). This is on a fairly beefy machine (dual core AMD, 2GB memory) running Feisty AMD64.

Memory use as reported by top:

25803 brick 18 0 2167m 1.1g 19m T 0 54.4 0:45.31 gthumb

that is ~2.1G virt, 1.1G res, 19mb shared after only 45 CPU seconds.

Version 2.10.3 disables the preloading of giant tiff files. Try that version and see if it works better for you.

Where can I get a feisty compatible build? I tried installing 2.10.4 from gutsy, but it had unmet dependencies.

You can ask for a backport into feisty.

File a bug there : https://launchpad.net/feisty-backports
