virtualbox hard resets computer

I've the same problem...

DistroRelease: Ubuntu 12.04
kernel : 3.2.0-33-generic
Package: virtualbox 4.2.4 r81684

I've tried different Nvidia Drive, now 310.14 is used.

please run "apport-collect 1083520"

Package virtualbox not installed and no hook available, ignoring

...why? Virtualbox is running...

Ditto, same problem, on Intel but not AMD

I had problems with this machine [new laptop, Oct 2012] with kernel crashes in Linux Mint 13. Solved initially with custom kernel. This caused problems with VirtualBox kernel driver rebuilding (!), so installed Mint 14. VBox now installs OK, and runs, but crashes the whole machine [hard reset] shortly after booting the guest WinXP.

No problems on my fallback desktop LinuxMint 13 AMD machine. [same machine image]

I suspect, although have no evidence for, problems with the Intel display and Vbox ... All previous crashes on this machine were due to kernel bugs, since fixed, with the Intel display driver.

One of my VMs got into a state that makes my Ubuntu guest crash every
single time. Is it of any use to upload the VM somewhere? It's rather
large...

Adding to the previous comment, I re-installed Oracle's 4.2 version of virtualbox, and the same VMs that crach with Ubuntu's 4.1 version, work fine with 4.2.

I have since discovered that Windows 7 does not exhibit the same [crash the entire machine / hard reset] problem that Windows XP causes, so I at least have an avenue to move forward on ...
