Did overcome the issue by:
1. sudo rm /etc/xdg/sni-qt.conf
2. sudo apt-get update
3. sudo apt-get install sni-qt

I was getting the same error message while installing skype on Xubuntu 14.04 amd64. sni-qt:i386 wouldn't install as a result. Jean-Pierre's solution worked for me (although I renamed sni-qt.conf instead of deleting it outright).
