Bug Description

I have a Acer Aspire 2023 (Pentium M 1.6 Ghz Dothan + i855GM).

when i shutdown the laptop whit the 2.6.17 kernel it turn off "smoother", the same way has he shutdown from windows for example.. When i shutdown from the 2.6.20 kernel, looks like im making a hard shutdown, cant hear the HD shutting down, the fan stopping is different to.. i have tried different methods of shutdown (shutdown -h -P, halt, poweroff, etc...) the "problem" is in the kernel, Its just different, i cant explain it better...

2.6.17 - smooth shutdown
2.6.20 - hard+noisy shutdown

I've tried whit a 2.6.20 kernel compiled by me and the shutdown is normal. so the problem is in the feisty kernel.

I experience the same problem too, and I'm afraid of shutting down my computer
I will test how it works when I try to hibernate.
The pc just seems to be stopped by pressing the power button.

confirmed with HP Pavilion dv2196ea
When the system shuts down, the hard disk makes a slight squeak + single "tick" noise, as if it is parking
itself not properly.

I've had this problem since Breezy on my Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo M7440G. It sounds like a hard shutdown. It worked on one kernel version in Dapper other than that it hasn't worked properly.

Nothing to do with upstart, it just calls the kernel's reboot() system call

I think this should filed against 2.6.20 (source), since it has more to do with the kernel.

Confirmed for Asus A3N based laptop, 1.7GHz Pentium M, i855GM, 512MB RAM. System halts as if the power button has been held down. Using latest 2.6.20-14 feisty kernel (Linux tux 2.6.20-14-generic #2 SMP Mon Apr 2 20:37:49 UTC 2007 i686 GNU/Linux). This did not happen with earlier feisty kernels (I think 2.6.20-12 was alright, but I am not sure).

I also have this problem, and thought it started occuring at about
2.6.20-13. It definitely didn't happen when I first installed Feisty
Beta. And yet when I boot with (still-installed) kernel 2.6.20-12
generic (package: linux-image-2.6.20-12-generic), it fails to
shutdown.

I'm new to Ubuntu (Fedora expat), but perhaps it's not a kernel issue?

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!
