Bug Description

Binary package hint: vim

Vim is my main text editor and one of it's features which I consider a must-have is the syntax highlighing. Unfortunately it seems that Ubuntu's vim package does not enable syntax highlighting in vim by default. To make matters worse, it seems that in order to have vim with syntax highlighting the user's only option is to compile it's own.

It would be great if Ubuntu's vim package made syntax highlighting possible and didn't forced the users to compile it's own custom install.

Thanks for the bug report. Ubuntu installs vim-tiny by default. You are correct that syntax highlighting is disabled in vim-tiny. If you want a full featured vim, you don't need to compile your own though, just install vim-full from the Universe Repository.

I'm rejecting this since vim-full is available in Ubuntu's repositories, but if you disagree feel free to reopen it.

You are absolutely right. I never thought that there were two separate vim packages but there they are.

Thanks for pointing it out. Kudos!
