net install shouldn't just freeze if there's a mirror error

Bug Description

After the reboot the installer kicked in just fine and I choose the US mirror but once it got to the "Select and install software" screen after I've chosen Ubuntu as the desktop everything was very slow, even tough I'm on a 1 Mbps DSL.
I went for a beer and some wings with my wife and mother in law when it was at 1% and when we came back it was only at 6%. I left it running overnight and in the morning it was still struggling at 18% looking pretty stuck at "Preparing foomatic-
So my question is if this is normal?
I've used Instlux in the past and got an usable system in 3-5 hours later. This time about 12 hours have gone and it's still installing. The activity LED in the network card is off all the time and the HD LED only kicks in rarely.
I've now declared it death, after 36 hours the installer was still stuck at 18% "Preparing foomatic-
