Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-shell

Lots of users doesn't know how to start any application in GNOME3, because there are nothing related to "Applications" when GNOME desktop starts. In Ubuntu Unity desktop shell the launcher with icons on the left is shown after user logs in. I think GNOME3 desktop should have similar appearance (like Unity) when started:
For most users the best option would be to display Activities (launcher with icons on the left and list of recently used files and applications) when GNOME desktop starts (when user logs in), and then add a visual hint as to how to open Activities again when user does anything that closes the overlay.

There is a Gnome Shell extension which displays Activities in "Applications" mode, named "Overview on startup", see

https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/658/overview-on-startup/

This bug is already reported in GNOME upstream: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=648456

I think this could be fixed if Ubuntu wanted to ship Dash to Dock by default.
