Bug Description

Binary package hint: nvidia-glx

Shouldn't there be a .desktop file, with an appropriate nvidia icon, for the nvidia-settings tool so that it'll show up in my menus somewhere?

For example, the following website lists one (search for nvidia-settings): http://ubuntuguide.org/

The attached desktop file was lightly modified from that previously provided by the nvidia-settings package. Please also see bug#22297 regarding an icon.

I think it would be a good idea to get this bug (and bug #22297 too) fixed upstream as well, on nvidia's Linux driver page - http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_ia32_1.0-8756.html - the following is written:

"If you have any questions or problems, please check the linux discussion forum. If you don't find an answer to your question there, you can send email (in English) to <email address hidden>."

So maybe it would be a good idea that the Ubuntu dev's contact nvidia to get these two bugs fixed?

I think it might be a problem in the Ubuntu/Debian packages, considering I installed the new beta drivers using nvidia's installer program and it added a menu entry with an icon just fine.

Yes, nvidias installer script adds a menu icon, but this is not avaliable in the ubuntu package.

Removed "bitesize packaging" tags. This needs a discussion with nvidia to use their icon.

This looks like a dup of bug #22297 ...

This and bug 22297 are related, but slightly different. When the nvidia-settings binary was moved from the nvidia-settings package to linux-restricted-modules, the .desktop file was not also moved, causing this bug. No patch has been prepared for this in the interest of avoiding a icon bug (like 22297) for linux-restricted-modules as a result of the integration of a .desktop file. Note that 22297 is now somewhat obsolete, as the nvidia-settings package conflicts with linux-restricted-modules, and cannot be installed for normal use when only using software from current Ubuntu repositories.

Still an issue with 2.6.24. The upstream installers include the necessary files, so they should be distributable.

This is probably fixed in Baltix now also?
