Bug Description

I think I collected enough data for this (and I'm already too late for Dapper).

Without the modem connection, the user cannot connect to the repos and get the files s/he needs for his/her modem. But without these files, a modem user cannot connect to the net.

Also, broadband usage is not widespread everywhere, and in some countries hardmodems are either unavailable or expensive.

Please see this thread (ignore my badly written first post) to see that out of 422 users, 292 supported winmodems to be supported out of the box.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=82608

Even though an extensive collaboration with linmodems.org is ideal, for the time being, may be we can just give an efficient out-of-the-box winmodem support. But still, a collarboration between Ubuntu developers and linmodems.org people would be most advantageous and profitable for the winmodem'ed linux users.

Changing to "wishlist". It's still a feature request even though it is _critical_ in nature...

Towsonu, this is a known issue, it is even listed as a bounty for Google Summer of Code. Anyway it would be very nice if you try to write a specification (look at other specifications as examples)

could you please post a pointer for help with "specifications"?

Also, can we change the status to "confirmed"?

Thanks very much.

It would be nice to have working winmodems (especially PCI/USB DSL modems) out of box in new Baltix version, based on Ubuntu Dapper

I'd love to see how Baltix incorporates this. It could help Ubuntu implement it :)

Also, (just forgot to say this) would it be possibe to file this bug for both the linux-source and the linux-restricted-drivers packages? I'd do that, but I dont wanna frustrate the devels.

why:
linux-source: including non-proprietary drivers here
linux-restricted-drivers: including proprietary drivers here, with permission from its writers

at specifications, said like implemented but isn't true ( https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/winmodem-support )

one example: My modem: (run with smartlink driver )
lspci -vnnn output
00:0a.0 Modem [0703]: Motorola SM56 Data Fax Modem [1057:3052] (rev 04) (prog-if 00 [Generic])
 Subsystem: Motorola Unknown device [1057:3020]
Flags: bus master, stepping, medium devsel, latency 32, IRQ 16
 Memory at e5000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=4K]
 I/O ports at a000 [size=256]
Capabilities: [80] Power Management version 2
the Out of box means that the packages sl-modem-modules and/or sl-modem-daemon and/or sl-modem-source SHOULD BE at default installation ( cd image of course, if I dont have a modem installed , I cant download it )

The better manner is put all these winmodem drivers at Restricted module like Nvidia and ATI drivers.

And there is other problems even download by other sources ( eth0 (cable modem lent ) , friend's internet etc) there is fatal errors :

Thank you for reporting this issue about a driver from the
linux-restricted-modules package. lrm-2.4.24 was shipped with Ubuntu
8.04 which reached end-of-life for desktop support on May 12th, 2011.

For that reason, this bug report is being closed at this time. I'm
marking it wontfix because what you describe is probably a valid issue,
but there are no plans to work on lrm 2.4.24 bugs further.

The issue may be resolved in a newer version. If not, aside from filing
a new bug report, another angle may be to file it directly with the
driver vendor.

Changed in linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24 (Ubuntu):
status: Confirmed → Won't Fix
