Bug Description
Folder overlay on top of wallpaper. In gnome desktop, the Desktop folder is permanently overlaid as a transparent grid on top of the wallpaper background so that files, folders, links, and launchers in the Desktop folder can be affixed to the screen and presented to the user. We get full visible access to all the files and folders contained within in the form of desktop icons. Some may wish to choose one or more folders to be associated with a given workspace so that its/their contents are made available as convenient desktop icons within that workspace.

Interesting idea. However, I'm afraid that people can get confused with that notion and maybe only showing the ~/Desktop for now is the safest way to not get them lost. In any case, asking for some design feedback :)
