Bug Description
The current workspace switcher in the Unity launcher does not give any information about the current workspace and therefore I you have to click on it (or Super+S) to open the spread feature in order to know which workspace I were in.
Workspace switcher panel applet in Gnome 2.x used to show which workspace you were working in.
In order to implement it, a simple four square icon with four different states (active square with white background, for the sake of simplicity), each corresponding to each of the four workspaces. For any other number of workspaces different icons would be necessary.

I can confirm the issue, its in the compiz patch in Ubuntu, no matter which workspace is the active, workspace #1 always stays lightened up.
